| What is the difference between an "estimate" and a "bid" ? An "estimate" is generally based on very limited information. It is at best, just a "guess-timate" without all the details. An estimate may be provided after a brief visit to your home, but remember, there are many factors that need careful consideration to get an accurate cost (or "bid"). A "bid", on the other hand, should include every detail about your project including specific material selections you make. It requires all the details of the project and will likely take many hours to produce. Should I hire an architect/designer first? In today’s remodeling industry there are many options for remodeling your home. It is best if you can work with a team of individuals to get your project off to a good start. One great way to accomplish this is to find a contractor that handles both the design and the actual construction, also called “Design/Build” companies. This will help to keep your budget in focus, produce a more accurate bid and have fewer surprises later!
How do I keep from having the “nightmare” experience I have heard so many others talk about? The simple answer; hire a professional! You should be able to see their work, hear from their past clients, and ask them questions about how they operate as well as how long they have been in business. Many professional remodelers have nationally recognized certifications specific to the remodeling industry and have learned proven techniques for insuring you have a great experience. They should be people you would be comfortable having over for dinner! How long will my project take to complete? Another simple answer; longer than you think! Believe it or not, most professional contractors prefer to get the project done quickly and efficiently rather than have it drag on. A better question may be, how much time do you have to commit to the planning stages of your project? A great remodeling experience hinges upon the planning and preparation that takes place before the construction begins. Give yourself more time than you think you need and chances are it will get done faster than it would if you don’t! Is it better to remodel or should I look for a “better” home to fit my needs? For this you need to practice a small exercise. Make a list of pro’s and con’s. What do you love about your home? What about your location? Where would you like to live in 5 years? If you love your home and your surroundings, it is usually more cost effective to make improvements in your existing home, than it is to move and end up with a “new” remodeling project. If you have owned your home for any length of time, in the end you will find a better value in improving your existing home.
